As the Trump administration defunds federal climate action, we need our cities, counties, and states to step up. That’s why Lead Locally is supporting climate champions running for local elected office across the country.
In summer and fall 2026, we are getting out the vote in three priority races with important stakes for climate and democracy:
- In Arizona, we are making calls in support of state legislators in competitive swing districts. Arizona is one of the largest states in the country without a statewide plan to reduce carbon emissions, because Republicans have held control of both chambers of the state legislature for decades and consistently blocked any climate legislation. This year, we have an opportunity to secure a Democratic trifecta by flipping just two State Senate seats and three State House seats plus re-electing Katie Hobbs as Governor – which would make bold climate legislation at the state level possible.
- In Pennsylvania, we are supporting a slate of State House and State Senate candidates. Pennsylvania is one of just four states with divided control of the state government, and in 2026, Democrats have the opportunity to win a trifecta for the first time in more than 30 years. If we pick up just three seats in the State Senate and expand our two seat lead in the House, then Pennsylvania can pass historic climate legislation that will move the state towards a 100% renewable future.
- In Eugene, Oregon, we are backing the Eugene Clean Energy Fund, a ballot initiative to fund local climate justice projects by placing a fee on the profits of the largest corporations in Eugene. The measure is based on the success of Portland’s Clean Energy Fund (PCEF), which has generated $1.71 billion in funding for climate programs since 2018. If passed, ECEF would fund clean energy jobs and job training in low-income Eugene neighborhoods and get the city back on track to meet its clean energy goals.

In the face of MAGA’s attacks on our communities and the climate, downballot races have an outsized role in the fight for climate and environmental justice – and making calls to voters in key downballot races is a concrete, strategic action you can take right now.
